Over the past few weeks we have seen a rise in diesel thefts from HGVs parked up on the A66 in the vicinity of Morton Park, Darlington.

As a result of a report received from a member of the public we conducted proactive work as part of Operation Trident, which targets acquisitive crime in the area.

This led to a car being stopped by officers from the Cleveland and Durham Roads Policing Unit and syphoning equipment being recovered from the vehicle and its two occupants, who both originate from the Cleveland area, being arrested.

The two men were arrested on suspicion of theft and going equipped. They have been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Inspector Neil Fuller, of Darlington CID, said: “We will always act to disrupt this type of crime and want to thank the public for alerting us to this particular incident.

“We would ask all residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to us by calling 101.”
