A burglar is today starting a two-year prison sentence after stealing from his own relative.

David Welsh waited until his the elderly victim had left the house before breaking into the rear of the property in Grosvenor Street, Darlington, on January 15.

Along with other unknown men, Welsh trashed the property and stole large amounts of crockery, china plates, figurines and antique clocks which were not only valuable but also sentimental.

The 41-year-old used the victim’s cushion covers to conceal the haul as he left the property.

Welsh, of Lawrence Street, Darlington, was arrested but refused to name the other suspects or say what had happened to the items.

He pleaded guilty to burglary and was sentenced to 24 months in prison at Teesside Crown Court yesterday (July 16).
